Petrie Earns Third Rookie of the Week Honor
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Freshman Alex Petrie of the Lafayette men’s basketball team won his third Patriot League Rookie of the Week award, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon.
Petrie, leading the Leopards in scoring in Patriot League play at 18.4 points per outing over his last 14 games, helped the Maroon and White to back-to-back wins this past week in decisive fashion over Army (81-54) and Loyola (84-67). The rookie averaged 19.5 points and 3.0 rebounds during those two contests, including a game-high 23 in the Army victory.
The Midlothian, Va. native is closing in on a number of freshman records at Lafayette, sitting just 11 points shy of the single-season rookie scoring mark at 373 points this season. Petrie is 0.4 points per game off the scoring average record for freshman and is two three’s away from the total three-pointers record by rookies. Finally, his 42.6 percent mark this season from distance puts him in range of the single-season freshman 3FG% benchmark, held by Bryce Scott ’16 at 42.7 percent in 2012-13.
In addition to Petrie’s honors, senior co-captain Matt Klinewski was also given an honorable mention, averaging 19.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in the undefeated week. Klinewski scored a game-high 25 points on 9-of-12 from the field in the win over Loyola on Sunday afternoon.
The Leopards, looking for their first three-game win streak of the season and their fourth victory in the last five outings, travel to Annapolis, Md. for their next contest on Wednesday. Tip-off at Navy is set for 7 p.m.
