Jan. 10, 2005
EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette freshman guard Bilal Abdullah (Anchorage, Alaska/Tabor Academy) has been named the Patriot League Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week for the second straight week and third time overall in the 2004-05 season.
Abdullah, who is second on the team in scoring with 9.8 points per game, has scored in double figures eight times this season and five of the last six games. In the Leopards' first game of the week, Abdullah netted eight points in 24 minutes against St. Francis (N.Y.).
In Lafayette's Patriot League opener on Jan. 8, Abdullah scored 15 points, grabbed five rebounds, dished off three assists and managed three steals to pace the Leopards. He teamed up with sophomore Jamaal Douglas, who scored a career-high 18 points and snatched a career-best 17 rebounds, to lead Lafayette to a 90-80 win over Navy.
Abdullah leads the team in assists (39-3.0 a.p.g.) and steals (20-1.5 s.p.g.) and has started seven of the 13 games he has played in during his freshman year.
Abdullah was previously named Rookie of the Week on Dec. 20, when he finished an assist shy of a triple-double against Cal State Northridge. On Jan. 3, he earned the honor again following a 12-point, four-steal performance at No. 9 Georgia Tech and an 11-point, three-rebound effort in a win over Columbia.
Lafayette (5-8, 1-0) returns to action on Wednesday when the Leopards take a short trip west on I-78 to face Lehigh. Tip off is set for 8 p.m. at Stabler Arena.
