Box Score

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Junior Matt Klinewski of the Lafayette men’s basketball team put together a solid bounce-back performance on Wednesday evening in Lewisburg, Pa., scoring a game-high 20 points in a 94-64 loss at Bucknell.

The junior hit on 8-of-16 from the field and went 4-of-6 from the foul line to go along with his five rebounds and an assist. It was a solid effort for the Leopards’ leading scorer after registering just two points in the loss to Lehigh on Sunday.

Freshman Lukas Jarrett and junior Eric Stafford also had standout games for the Maroon and White as the other two double-figure scorers. Jarrett ripped down eight rebounds to go along with a career-high 13 points, while Stafford added 10 points, six rebounds, six assists and a steal on the evening.

The three-point line was the story of the game for the home side as Bucknell tied a program-record with 17 triples and broke a program record with 40 three-point attempts, a 42.5 percent mark from beyond the arc. Stephen Brown was excellent, scoring 17 points and dishing out nine assists, with seven helpers coming in the first 20 minutes. Zach Thomas led the Bison offensively with 20 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, while, as a team, Bucknell tallied 24 assists to just five turnovers and shot 48.6 percent from the field (35-of-72).

The loss drops Lafayette to 8-20 overall and 4-13 in Patriot League action. With wins by both Army and American on Wednesday, the Leopards can get either the ninth or 10th seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament based on the outcomes of Saturday’s games. Clear playoff scenarios will be highlighted in the next set of game notes, available later this week on GoLeopards.com.

The game started slowly on either side before a pair of Lafayette turnovers led to five straight for the Bison that opened up a 9-4 advantage after 4:39 of action. However, the Leopards quickly settled down and began to execute offensively as a Stafford layup across the lane made it a 16-12 game at the midway point of the half.

Unfortunately, Klinewski picked up his second foul during the latter stages of the opening half, setting up Bucknell for a 16-2 run that opened the lead to 16 at 32-16 with 3:45 left. The Bison didn’t take their foot off the gas into the break as back-to-back triples from Brown made it a 44-23 game at halftime.

The two teams traded buckets to open the second stanza as Paulius Zalys’ finish through a foul made it 52-32 after four minutes. However, it was all Bucknell from that point forward as Avi Toomer’s triple at the 11:03 mark expanded the lead to 30 at 70-40.

Auston Evans’ strong drive on the baseline and finish above the rim at the 9:53 mark made it 72-42, while back-to-back triples from Jarrett and Stafford cut it to 22 at 76-54 with 6:06 to play. However, that was as close as the Leopards would get as Bucknell continued to pull away, finishing it off with a 94-64 final.

The last regular season game will take place on Saturday in Hamilton, N.Y. as the Leopards battle Colgate at 2 p.m. The opening round of the Patriot League Tournament is set for Tuesday, Feb. 28.
