Men's Basketball Dominates the Backboards in 66-49 Win Over Army
Jan. 30, 2005
EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Matt Betley had 12 points, eight rebounds and a career-high five assists while Sean Knitter and Jamaal Douglas controlled the interior as Lafayette posted a 66-49 win over Army on Sunday afternoon at Kirby Sports Center. Knitter (nine rebounds) and Douglas (six boards) both scored 14 points and the Leopards held a 47-28 advantage on the glass to overcome 36 percent shooting. Lafayette (2-5, 6-14) was just 10-of-31 from the field in the first half but had 11 offensive rebounds and led 30-20 at the break. Betley opened the scoring with a three and found Douglas for a basket. Douglas hit from downtown at 17:39 and Betley made another at 15:20 to give Lafayette an 11-6 lead. The Leopards made three of their first five from long range, but then missed their next 17 three-point attempts, and finished 6-of-28 from beyond the arc. Despite the cold shooting, Lafayette led throughout, and finished the first half on a 10-3 run. Two buckets by Cory Sinning, who had a game-high 16 points, were the only field goals by the Black Knights in the last 6:30 before halftime. Army (1-6, 3-16) pulled within four, at 33-29, with 15:31 left. Lafayette led 36-30 at the 14-minute mark before Knitter scored on four straight possessions. A three by Pat Betley snapped the poor shooting streak and gave the Leopards a 47-35 advantage with 8:26 remaining. Douglas, Jamaal Hilliard and Bilal Abdullah scored five points each down the stretch, and the 17-point margin at the final buzzer was the largest of the game.
Lafayette turned the ball over just four times in the second half and made 16-of-19 from the foul line in the contest. Matt Bell netted 10 points for Army, and Steve Stoll had eight points and eight rebounds. Andrei Capusan was one of four Leopards with at least a half-dozen rebounds, pulling down six boards in 13 minutes of action. Lafayette will open the second round of Patriot League action with contests against Bucknell and Colgate on Friday, Feb. 4 and Sunday, Feb. 6. Sunday's game with Colgate will be televised on CSTV as part of the "Patriot League Game of the Week" package. |
