Contact Coach Schwethlem:
Pete Schwethelm brings over a decade of coaching experience to Lafayette as he embarks on his second season with the Leopards. He was an assistant at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), a Division III school in New York prior to joining Fran O'Hanlon's coaching staff for the 2007-08 season.
At the Academy, Schwethelm was involved with all aspects of the program, working with former Lafayette assistant and current USMMA head coach John Krikorian. Prior to his stint in New York, he worked as the video coordinator at Georgia Tech and Rice University, respectively. It was during his time in Atlanta that Schwethelm first became familiar with Lafayette's basketball tradition, as he worked alongside another member of O'Hanlon's coaching tree in current Georgia Tech assistant coach John O'Connor.
Before his time at Rice, Schwethelm spent several years as a small college and high school coach in Texas. While enrolled in undergraduate courses, he worked under Rob Shapiro at Schreiner College in Kerrville, Texas, for two years. Immediately after graduation, he coached with Bobby Sanders at Episcopal High School in Houston for one year before accepting a head coaching job at The Winston School in Dallas. After two years at the small private school, Schwethelm worked with Texas coaching legend JD Mayo for one season at Dallas Skyline High School.
Thanks in large part to his former high school coaches David Balderrama and Charlie Boggess, Schwethelm knew early on that he wanted to coach, joining the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches as a senior in high school. Years later, he helped found the Georgia Basketball Coaches Association (www.gbca.us), and Dreams Within Reach (www.dreamswithinreach.org), a non-profit foundation designed to help at-risk youths.
Schwethelm received his bachelor's degree in History from Trinity University in 1999.
