HARWICH, Mass. – Two members of the Lafayette baseball team, Alex Farina and Andrew Santomauro, recently completed their summer league season as members of the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod Baseball League.
The duo of Farina and Santomauro each opened the season in the New England Collegiate Baseball League with the Plymouth Pilgrims prior to their stints in the Cape League. For the Pilgrims, Farina appeared in 10 games, posting a 2.73 ERA out of the bullpen in 26.1 innings of work. The Leopards’ right-hander fanned 26 batters, walked 10, and surrendered 23 hits en route to a 0-2 record. In his only appearance for Harwich, he fired two perfect innings to earn the save in a 5-1 victory over Brewster on Aug. 4. Farina struck out two of the six batters he faced.
Santomauro, a NECBL all-star earlier in the summer, finished the season with a .312 batting average (53-for-170) and led Plymouth in hits, runs scored (23) and stolen bases. His 53 knocks and 23 steals each ranked second in the entire NECBL. For the Mariners, the Leoaprds’ centerfielder collected one hit in six plate appearances.
Harwich has been a member of the Cape League since 1930 and most recently captured the League championship in 2008 and 2011. Current major leaguers who played for Harwich include Tim Lincecum (2005), Dustin Ackley (2009) and Brandon Belt (2009).
