Bednar Drafted by the San Diego Padres

EASTON, Pa. -- Rising senior RHP David Bednar was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 35th round of the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Saturday. Bednar was the 1044th pick, the Leopards' first draftee since Ian Dickson in 2011.

In his junior season of 2016, Bednar made 10 starts on the mound and finished with a 3-5 record. He led Lafayette in earned-run average (3.92), innings pitched (59.2), complete games (5), strikeouts (70) and batting average against (.241).

Bednar is ranked third all-time in program history with 188 strikeouts overall. Serving as Lafayette's No. 1 starter throughout the season, he registered a microscopic 1.53 ERA over five starts from March 4 - April 2, and he was a two-time Patriot League Pitcher of the Week. Bednar struck out an average of eight batters during five conference starts, and he was second in the league in K's at the conclusion of the regular season.

The Valencia, Pa. native is spending his summer playing in the Cape Cod Baseball League for the Falmouth Commodores.
