Lafayette's Fritz Named Patriot League Baseball Rookie of the Week
May 5, 2008
EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette pitcher Zach Fritz was tabbed the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. The honor is the second of the season for Fritz and comes following a seven-inning shutout of Stony Brook on Saturday.
Fritz pitched the opening game of a four-game series against the Seawolves and recorded his first career complete-game shutout in a 3-0 Lafayette victory. In seven innings of work, he surrendered just three hits, did not walk a batter and struck out two to earn his fourth win of the season.
The Pottsville, Pa. native lowered his season ERA to 2.88, a mark that leads all Patriot League starting pitchers. Batters are hitting just .230 against him, the second-lowest average in the league behind only teammate Kevin Reese. He has not allowed an extra-base hit in his last two starts and has not walked a batter in four of his eight starts this season.
The Leopards (25-22) conclude their 2008 regular season with a road game against Rider on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
