Leopards Renew Rivalry with Lehigh

Lafayette hosts rival Lehigh for a pair of doubleheaders this weekend. The weekend series marks the first Patriot League contests for the two squads. The Leopards enter the series 3-19 overall, while the Mountain Hawks carry an 11-10 record. Last Time Out
The Leopards fell to visiting Penn on Wednesday afternoon in the Liberty Bell Classic, 8-1. Sophomore James McCool knocked in the only run for Lafayette on an RBI single. Freshman lefthander Ari Kaufman suffered his first loss of the season, giving up four runs in two innings of work. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Alex Farina pitched two perfect innings in relief, striking out three batters.
The Mountain Hawks are 11-10 overall with wins over Maryland Eastern Shore, Fordham, Coppin State, UNC Greensboro and Mount St. Mary’s. Senior Casey Turner has a team-high 25 hits and 13 RBI. Sophomore Justin Pacchioli leads Lehigh in average (.344) and triples (2), while also knocking in 11 runs. Junior Tyler Brong has scored a team-high 18 runs.
The Leopards hold a 226-140-3 advantage in the all-time series that dates back to 1869. Lafayette and Lehigh split the four games a season ago in Bethlehem.
Saturday afternoon will be partly cloudy with a high of 54 degrees, while Sunday has a sixty percent chance of rain and a high of 52 degrees.
Lafayette senior second baseman Kevin Casey was honorable mention in Patriot League Player of the Week voting on March 12. The senior had five hits in 14 at bats for the week, scoring a team-high seven runs. Casey had two doubles and two runs batted in to go along with six walks, leading the Leopards to their first two wins of the season. The senior leads the team in runs scored (18) and is tied for the team lead with 23 hits.
The Leopards will host La Salle on Tuesday, April 2 in the Liberty Bell Classic at Kamine Stadium, followed by a weekend series at home against Holy Cross.
The Leopards were picked to finish fifth in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, after going 14-37-1 a season ago. Lafayette senior co-captain Kevin Casey garnered Preseason All-Patriot League honors at second base on the League’s inaugural preseason team. Casey hit .330 last season with 17 RBI.
