Ortolf, Bednar Take Patriot League Weekly Awards

Go Leopards!

March 10, 2014

EASTON, Pa. – Fresh off a sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson, a pair of Lafayette pitchers claimed weekly awards from the Patriot League for their efforts. Senior Connor Ortolf was named the Pitcher of the Week, while freshman David Bednar was recognized as the conference’s Rookie of the Week.

Ortolf set the tone for the series with his dominant performance over eight shutout innings against the Knights in game one. The left-hander limited FDU to one hit in his first victory of the season and carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning of the contest. Ortolf finished his start with three strikeouts and two walks in his longest career outing without surrendering a run. It is the first Patriot League Pitcher of the Week honor of Ortolf’s career.

Bednar’s first-career start was a memorable one for the right-hander after he twirled five scoreless innings to earn the win in Lafayette’s fourth consecutive victory. Bednar fanned five and walked one in the Leopards’ 6-2 victory, while only throwing 60 pitches.

Lafayette is back in action on Friday, March 14 when it heads to Richmond, Va. for three games at The Diamond. The Leopards will play VCU on Friday at 6:30 p.m., Rutgers at noon on Saturday and Buffalo at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
