Baseball Falls in Saturday Doubleheader to Bison
LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Lafayette baseball team dropped a pair of Patriot League contests to Bucknell on Saturday afternoon at Depew Field.
Steven Cohen paced the Leopards (3-34, 1-9) in the leadoff spot with a five-hit day to go along with a pair of runs scored against the Bison (15-18, 6-4 PL). Luke Robinson added four hits in the two games combined, including a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish in the opening tilt.
Game 1: Bucknell 4, Lafayette 1 (7 innings)
WP: Connor Van Hoose (4-4), LP: Trevor Houck (2-6)
The Bison starter, Connor Van Hoose, kept the Lafayette bats in check, limiting the Maroon and White to one run on six hits and nine strikeouts in the first game of the doubleheader.
Bucknell broke through first in the scoring column after a leadoff triple in the second resulted in a one-out sacrifice fly to right. The Bison lead was extended to three in the third once the leadoff hitter got on with a double and came in to score on a two-run homer to left center.
In the fifth, Danny Rafferty was hit by a pitch with one out in the inning and later scored on an RBI single up to middle to put Bucknell ahead 4-0.
The Leopards got to Van Hoose in the sixth when Cohen led things off with a double to left and after advancing to third on a later play, scored on an error by a Bucknell infielder to trim the deficit to three.
Lafayette entered the seventh still trailing 4-1 and despite Robinson picking up his third hit of the game on a double to left, the Leopards were unable to plate another run and ultimately were defeated.
Game 2: Bucknell 6, Lafayette 5
WP: Mike Castellani, LP: Connor Jones (1-3), SV: Jack Simpson (1)
The Leopards bounced back after a one-run performance in the series opener and put up five scores on 10 hits against the Bison in the second game.
After Bucknell took a 3-0 advantage in the second inning, Lafayette came up to hit in the top of the third and following back-to-back singles by Isaiah Berg and Cohen, a run crossed on a Quentin Bubb RBI groundout.
It remained a two-run contest until the fifth, but the Leopards received some timely offense with two outs in the inning. Berg walked and scored once Cohen and Bubb followed with two consecutive singles. John Selsor then shot a two-RBI double to left center and both Cohen and Bubb scored to give Lafayette its first lead of the afternoon.
The Lafayette lead did not hold for long though as the Bison countered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to move ahead 5-4. In the sixth, a solo home run for Bucknell made it a two-run game.
In the ninth, the Leopards kicked off the inning with singles by Alex Woinski and Robinson. After being sacrificed over on a bunt, Berg sent a dribbler to the right side of the infield and a run crossed, but the second out of the inning was recorded on the play. The Leopards were unable to plate another run in the inning though and the Bison took the first two games of the weekend series.
The series will resume tomorrow with another doubleheader beginning at noon in Lewisburg, Pa.
