Spartans Take Two From Leopards
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Lafayette baseball team dropped a pair of road games to UNCG on Friday afternoon at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
Game 1: UNCG 14, Lafayette 2
WP: Bryce Hensley (3-2), LP: Trevor Houck (1-3)
The Leopards were held to just three hits at the plate in the first game of the doubleheader against the Spartans, with two coming from Spencer Rouse. The sophomore shortstop recorded a double and also drove in two runs.
The Spartans were first to get on the board and following back-to-back walks, Cesar Trejo and Caleb Webster knocked two straight RBI singles to put UNCG up 2-0 in the opening frame.
The Leopards were unable to get any runners on in the opening two innings, but in the third, there were runners on second and third before Rouse rifled a two-RBI double into left to knot the game up at 2-2.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Spartans retook the lead. The bases were loaded once Andrew Moritz walked, Webster singled and Tripp reached on a fielder’s choice. UNCG then rattled off three straight hits, including a pair of singles and a triple to plate four runs and move ahead 6-2.
Over the course of the next three innings, the Spartans would add eight additional runs and grab a 14-2 lead and eventual win.
Game 2: UNCG 8, Lafayette 7
WP: Andrew Wantz (4-2) LP: Connor Jones (0-2) SV: Chad Sykes (3)
David Giusti got the start for the Leopards and turned in six solid innings of work, allowing four hits and two earned runs. However, the Spartans got to him in the seventh which sparked a late rally that led to the 8-7 comeback win.
The Leopards picked up their production at the plate in the second game of the doubleheader and Rouse continued to put the bat on the ball. He was one of two Lafayette batters in the game to record three hits. Quentin Bubb also tallied three knocks, while Dan Leckie and Alex Woinski added a pair and combined for three RBIs.
A Rouse triple to left center in the first inning set the Leopards up for an early lead as he later came in to score on a wild pitch. Lafayette pushed the lead to two once Leckie led off the second with a solo home run.
In the third, Bubb shot a one-out single up and the middle and was moved over to third once Rouse doubled down the line in left. Luke Robinson then drove them both in to score on a two-RBI single into center to give Lafayette a 4-0 advantage.
The Spartans eventually got to Giusti in the fourth once Ben Spitznagel led off the inning with a triple to center and then scored once Moritz grounded out to the right side.
The Leopards boosted their lead back to four though in the sixth once Leckie doubled and was brought in to score on a Nick Shah single through the right side.
UNCG loaded the bases up in the seventh following back-to-back walks and Connor Jones came on in relief for Giusti. A bunt single advanced the runners before Ryne Sigmon hit a grand slam to give the Spartans their first lead of the game, 6-5. The inning did not end there and after two singles, a sacrifice fly and a double brought in a pair of runs to extend the lead to three.
In the eighth, Leckie drew a base on balls with two outs in the inning before Alex Woinski hit a two-run blast to cut the deficit to one.
The Leopards entered the ninth still trailing by one and despite putting a pair of runners on with two outs in the inning, they were unable to score and ultimately fell 8-7.
The series will come to a close tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
