Letter From Head Coach John Garrett

Jan. 5, 2018

Dear Friends, Alumni and Supporters of Lafayette Football,

What a day…what a day for football! It’s a great day to be a Lafayette Leopard! “It’s a privilege, not a right, to play and coach for the Lafayette Leopards.” It’s also a privilege to be an alumnus and supporter of Lafayette football and every one of our players and coaches appreciates you for your love and devotion to our program.

It’s an exciting time for Lafayette football. Our current players have been working hard since the conclusion of the season to be better in 2018. The theme for December and January is…”We are to gain ground, not lose it.” Our charge is for the team to arrive for winter workouts after interim “bigger, stronger and faster” than when they left after exams. We have to hit the ground running upon our return so winter workouts are not a time to catch-up, but a time to excel and improve.

With the hiring of Sherryta Freeman as our new AD and the addition of 15 new players on early signing day, we are poised and ready to reach new heights in 2018. We became a relevant team in 2017. We finished third in the Patriot League and we were playing for a tie for the league championship in the last week of the season. Our goal is to move from relevant to significant in 2018.

Significant teams consistently compete for championships and through hard work in the off-season and with the addition of more talent from the 2018 recruiting class, we believe we can consistently compete for championships. We put the Patriot League on notice in 2017! Watch out for the Leopards in 2018! Please access for a preview, bios and highlights of the new members of our 2018 recruiting class. We are thrilled with the 14 student-athletes we added to our team. Each one is smart, tough and talented. Each one is the “right-kind-of-guy” who loves football. We are pleased with this group and are excited to add additional talented players on signing day in February.

We will have a signing day party on Wednesday Feb. 7, 2018 to celebrate the signing of our entire 2018 recruiting class. All alumni and friends of Lafayette football are welcome to attend. Also, mark your calendars for our football banquet that recaps the 2017 season which will be held Feb. 18. Spring practice begins March 20th with practices on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and concludes with the Spring Game on Saturday, April 20. You all are welcome to visit and watch practice. Come see us!

Thank you for your love and devotion to Lafayette Football. Without your loyal and valuable support in 2017, we would not be where we are today as a program and certainly not be able to get to where we need to be in the future. Please stop by and see us at the Bourger Varsity Football House, the best FCS football facility east of the Mississippi! Everyone is welcome anytime and all the time.

From all of us in Lafayette football, we wish you a Happy New Year!

Go Leopards!
