Harmon and Serem pace the Leopards to start 2017

LINCROFT, N.J. – The Lafayette men’s and women’s cross country teams started their seasons off strong this past Saturday, with each squad earning third place overall at the Monmouth Kick-Off.

Women’s Cross Country

Seven Division I institutions took part in the 4K race on Saturday morning, with host Monmouth claiming the top spot with a score of 77, while Seton Hall (92) came in second. Lafayette rounded out the top three with a score of 124.

Junior Caroline Harmon paced the Leopards in their first race of the year, running the course in 14:41.6 which landed her in third place individually. The Maroon and White placed two more runners within the top 20, as Margaret Schiazza landed in 12th with a final time of 15:08.1, and Alexa Kwapinski finished 15th with a time of 15:10.9.

Emily King (15:25.5), Emily Becker (15:35.6) and Mikayla Pacilio all finished in the top 30 in the field of 76 runners.

Men’s Cross Country

The men’s 6K race featured seven teams as well, with host Monmouth again taking first place with a score of 20. Seton Hall took second with a total score of 50, while Lafayette claimed third place with a score of 92.

Senior Kelvin Serem led the Leopards as he finished 10th overall with a time of 19:19.9. Lafayette landed three more runners inside the top 30, with Tyler Pressl (20:04.3), Calvin Schenck (20:05.5) and Thomas Anthony (20:06.4) all running well in their first action of the year.

The Leopards next event is on Friday Sep. 8, as the Leopards head to Bethlehem, Pa. to take part in the Lehigh Duel at 5:30 p.m.
