Austin Wins Patriot League Track & Field Female Rookie of the Week
Jan. 29, 2008
EASTON, Pa. - Freshman sprinter Janica Austin (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Central) was named the Patriot League Track & Field Female Rookie of the Week after breaking the school record in the 60-meter hurdles at the Penn State Invitational on Jan. 25.
Austin narrowly missed advancing to the semifinals at the Penn State Invitational, finishing 18th with a time of 8.72 seconds. She hit the ECAC qualifying mark for the third time this season while competing with runners from perennial NCAA-qualifying schools such as Penn State, Tennessee and Virginia Tech.
"She has been working so hard to improve and become the best athlete she can," said assistant coach Kareem Jackson. "She knows the accolades will only come through hard work. The good news is she has room to grow and can only get better as the year goes on."
The Biology major grabbed a second-place finish at the NYC Gotham Cup two weeks earlier in the 60-meter hurdles. She also registered a time of 8.75 seconds to become the third-fastest in school history at the Crowell Open in West Point, N.Y. in early January.
The Leopards will travel to Bethlehem on Friday for a dual meet against rival Lehigh.
