Smith Snags Second Rookie of the Week Award for Track

EASTON, Pa. - Freshman Devin Smithof the Lafayette Track & Field team grabbed her second female Rookie of the Week honor, the Patriot League announced Monday.
Smith set a school record with a time of 57.02 and finished second in the 400-meter dash at the NYC Armory Saturday Night's Collegiate Series. The 400m time is the fastest in the Patriot League this season and Smith is the first ECAC qualifier in the event from a League school.
The former 400m school record of 57.57 seconds was set by Kate Evangelistain 2003.
"Devin Smith certainly has the qualities that make a great athlete," head coach Julio Piazza said. "She is talented and extremely hard working, but also, and this is the quality that sets her apart, she is a fierce competter."
Smith also ran on Lafayette's 4x400m relay team, which turned in a time of 4:00.28, the second-best in the League this year. Other members include seniors Chelsea Marone and Megan Matusky, and junior Kathryn White.
Senior Chris Parkerwas also given an Honorable Mention nod by the League. Parker finished second in the 800-meter run with an IC4A-qualifying time of 1:53.40, the fastest in the League this season.
The Lafayette track & field team competes next on Jan. 19 at the Gulden Invitational in Lewisburg, Pa.
