PRINCETON, N.J. – Junior Rachel Pena of the Lafayette track and field team took second in the Hammer Throw to lead the Leopards at the ECAC/IC4A Championships in Princeton, N.J. this past weekend.
Pena’s throw of 200’ 8” beat her previous personal best by 12 feet and earned her All-East honors. The junior becomes the second Lafayette female athlete in school history to break the 200-foot barrier in the event, joining four-time NCAA Championship-qualifier Ashley Harbin ’08.
Classmate Rose Willey provided another highlight from the meet, breaking the school record of Erika Stasakova ’12 in the 3,000m Steeplechase with a time of 10:50.88. That mark was 1.5 seconds faster than Stasakova’s, which was set at the same meet in 2012.
Senior Gwen Steckel also made her mark for the Leopards in the Discus, throwing 136’ to take 23rd place.
On the men’s side, sophomore Juannell Riley and junior Mac Maguire finished 19th and 20th, respectively, in the Hammer Throw. Riley threw 170’ 10”, while Maguire posted a 170’ 8” mark.
