WEST POINT, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - Four Lafayette throwers qualified for post-season regional competition following a stellar weekend at the Dick Shea Open hosted by Army on Saturday and Sunday. For the Leopards, Tyler Jones and Ashley Harbin turned in first-place finishes in the shot put and hammer throw, respectively.
With his winning shot throw of 54' 5 ¼", Jones broke a three-year-old Lafayette record and qualified for the IC4A Championships, which are slated to take place in mid-May. Jim Fischer set the previous record of 54' in 2002. Jones also took fourth in the disc (159'), and again qualified for the IC4A meet in the event. The junior came in seventh in the hammer with a 157' 4" heave.
On the women's side, Harbin made the NCAA Regional cut and moved into number two all-time at Lafayette with a 180'8" throw in the hammer. The mark set a new personal best for the sophomore, who also will participate in the ECAC Championships in May.
Classmate Andrea Cerbie improved to number three on the Leopards' all-time list and qualified for the ECAC meet with a fourth-place mark in the hammer. Cerbie's hurl reached 161' 1 ½". She also took 11th in the shot put (37'5").
