Pena Takes Weight Throw at PL Championships

Lewisburg, Pa. – Lafayette continued competition in Day Two of the Patriot League Track and Field Championships Saturday in Lewisburg, Pa.

The day kicked off with the completion of the men’s heptathlon. Chris Castello came in sitting in third after four events with 2,681 points. He used a third place (8.92) finish in the 60 meter hurdle, a fifth place (3.45 meter (11’3 ¾”)) effort in the pole vault, and a first place (2:52.74) in the 1000 meter run to secure a personal best finish of second place with 4,651 points.

The Maroon and White saw success in the field events. Junior Rachel Douglas placed fourth in the high jump by reaching a height of 1.60 meters (5’3”); the personal best tying effort gave five points to the Leopards.

Two-time Patriot League Female Field Athlete of the Week Rachel Pena proved to be the best in the conference in the weight throw. Her ECAC qualifying 18.87 meter (61’11”) toss was more than two meters farther than the next closest competitor. The throw set a new personal best for Pena.

Sophomore Jarrel Bobb set a new indoor personal best and earned a spot in IC4A competition in the long jump with a leap of 7.03 meters (23’ ¾”), nabbing a fifth place finish. On the women’s side of the same event, Brittany Powell took eighth place with her jump of 5.33 meters (17’6”).

After two days of competition, the women sit in seventh with 16 points, while the men are in sixth with 13 points.

Sunday’s field events will be the pole vault, shot put, and triple jump. The track events are the one mile run, 60 meter hurdle finals, 60 meter dash finals, 400 meter dash, 500 meter dash, 800 meter run, 1000 run, 200 meter dash finals, 3000 meter run, distance medley, and 4 x 400 meter relay.
