Leopards Take Eight Events at Dual Meet
BETHLEHEM, Pa. –The Lafayette men’s and women’s track and field teams had a strong showing at the Dual Meet against Lehigh on Saturday, but the Mountain Hawks were able to earn the win on both the men’s and women’s side.
On the men’s side, senior Dave McGriff continued his dominant romp to the start of indoor season, winning both the shot put and weight throw for the Leopards. McGriff won the shot put with a throw of 15.37m (50’ 51/2), while he claimed the top spot in the weight throw with a mark of 18.13m (59’ 6”). Sam Fishbein earned a third-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 14.56m (47’ 91/2).
Matt Beck grabbed another first place finish for the Maroon and White, taking the top spot in the high jump, reaching a height of 1.95m (6’ 43/4). Brendan Doyle earned a second place finish behind his teammate with a mark of 1.90m (6’23/4). Brian Kaufmann earned two top-three finishes, finishing second in the triple jump with a distance of 13.46m (44’ 2”), and taking third in the long jump, hitting 6.67m (21’ 103/4). Michael Thorne finished second in the pole vault, reaching 4.50m (14’ 9”).
On the track, Brendan Carroll claimed a first-place finish in the 500m, finishing in 1:08.65. Tyler Hubeny finished in third, crossing the finish line in a personal-best time of 1:10.54. The men won a tight 4x400 relay, as the team of Jacob Hubertus, Justin Johnson, Carroll and Dan Hogan beat the Mountain Hawks with a time of 3:35.64. Johnson and Hubertus both earned second place finishes in the 200m and 400m, respectively. Johnson ran the 200m in 22.97, while Hubertus finished the 400m in 52.84.
In the women’s events, the runners emerged victorious in three different events. Crosby Spiess claimed first place in the 400m, finishing in 59.57. Margaret Schiazza won the 800m with a time of 2:18.16. Gabi Galletta was the final first-place finisher, besting the Mountain Hawks in the 3000m with a PR of 10:13.44.
Amy Hewlett grabbed a second place finish in the 500m, crossing the finish line with a new PR of 1:18.83. Elizabeth Harmon had a strong showing in the mile run, finishing second with a time of 5:11.62. Senior Alexa Kwapinski grabbed a third-place finish in the 1000m, with a time of 2:58.17.
In the field events, Katie Ullmann finished third in the triple jump, reaching 10.22m (33’ 61/2), setting a new PR. Fellow Freshman Olivia Barney finished third in the shot put, setting a new PR with a distance of 11.46m (37’ 71/2). Barney added a second PR to her ledger in the weight throw, finishing fourth with a throw of 13.67m (44’ 101/2). Tracy Kurdziel also set a personal best in the weight throw, hitting 12.38m (40’, 73/4).
The Leopards are back in action with a full slate next weekend, beginning on Friday with the Bison Open at Bucknell.
