Track Takes Part in Great Dane Classic
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.—The Lafayette men’s and women’s track and field teams finished their busy weekend this afternoon, earning three top-five finishes after competing at the Spartan Invite on Friday.
The Leopards received an excellent in the women’s 800 meter run from Margaret Schiazza and Alexa Kwapinski, who finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Schiazza clocked in at 2:17.65, shattering her previous best by 12 seconds. Kwapinksi was right behind her teammate, crossing the finish line in 2:18.05.
Freshman Gabrielle Galletta earned a top-20 finish in the 1 mile, placing 16th out of 61 runners. Galletta posted a mile time of 5:16.52. Lafayette also posted a top-10 finish in the women’s 4x400 relay, as the team of Amy Hewlett, Kwapinski, Schiazza and Crosby Spiess earned a seventh place finish in the field of 30 with a time of 3:59.80. Spiess and Hewlett also competed in the women’s 400m, coming in 22nd and 36th, respectively, in the field of 71 runners. Spiess clocked in at 58.74, while Hewlett crossed the finish line in 1:00.09.
On the men’s side, Calvin Schneck placed in the top-20 of the men’s 1000 meter run, clocking in at 2:37,18, which was good for 18th. Michael Thorne shined in the pole vault, hitting 4.65m, which was good for third place. Tyler Pressl ran the 500m in 1:07.58, which placed him 23rd in the field of 45 runners. Tyler Hubeny competed in the men’s 60m hurdles, finishing with a time of 8.63.
The Leopards are back in action next weekend as they head to Bethlehem to take on rival Lehigh on Saturday, Jan. 20. The meet is scheudled for a 2 p.m. start.
