Diving Coach Mike Davis Medals in Atlanta
Sept. 22, 2005
EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Mike Davis, Lafayette's head men's and women's diving coach, won four silver medals and a bronze at the 15th Annual International Masters Aquatics Championships in Atlanta, Georgia, this summer. The championships were held July 22-24, 2005 at the Georgia Tech Aquatics Center, a 1,900-seat facility that hosted the 1996 Olympic Games.
Davis competed in the individual one- and three-meter springboard and platform diving events, as well as the one- and three-meter synchronized diving events with partner David McHue of Atlanta.
Swimming, diving, water polo and sychronized swimming events were held over the weekend, with 539 athletes participating. Five of the 12 divers at the championships were in the 40-44 year-old age group, in which Davis competed.
One of his strongest events was the platform, despite only competing on the tower in four previous competitions. The first came in 1999 at the same facility, while he also dove in Paris in 2000, Sydney in 2002 and Palo Alto, Calif. in 2003.
Of the six dives required on the tower, Davis learned two new dives - a reverse somersault tuck, and a back dive straight. He also performed an armstand reverse half-somersault (handstand cut-through), a forward dive pike, a forward 1-1/2 somersaults pike, and an inward dive pike.
Davis challenged himself to do the more difficult dives of the seven required on the three-meter springboard, and scored well on the back 1-1/2 somersaults straight, forward 1-1/2 somersaults one twist free, inward 1-1/2 somersaults pike, and the forward 2-1/2 somersaults pike.
Davis is in his third year as Lafayette's head diving coach. During his tenure, Lafayette's divers have broken two school records, and have advanced to the finals at the Patriot League Championships in both seasons. Davis is training three new divers, along with three returning student-athletes, in preparation for the 2005-06 campaign.
Davis runs a clinic for young divers at Lafayette's Ruef Natatorium. The lessons are scheduled for Monday and Wednesday evenings from Monday, September 19 through mid-February. Beginners (ages 6-12) dive from 6:00 p.m. until 7:15 p.m., while advanced divers (middle school through high school) receive instruction from 7:15 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. For more information, contact him at (610) 330-5735, or by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
