Academic Excellence
June 18, 2009
EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette men's and women's swimming and diving teams have been named College Swimming Coaches Academic All-Americans for the Spring 2009 semester. The men's and women's teams had their highest team grade-point averages (GPA) of 3.45 and 3.49 respectively. "The team has a very strong tradition of academic excellence over my 16 years as head coach," said Lafayette swimming and diving head coach Jim Dailey. "The women have achieved All-America status 31 of 32 semesters while the men have achieved this status 24 of 32 semesters. I am proud of the teams for taking their academics so seriously. I am fortunate that this seriousness completely comes from them. Their commitment to excel is already in them. All I provide is the flexibility for them to attain their academic goals." Last year the men's team had 22 student-athletes majoring in engineering. The women's team was not much different. Most of the women student-athletes are science, math or engineering majors. The remaining student-athletes are majoring in individual liberal disciplines with concentrations in pre-law or pre-medicine. The teams' academic commitment did not stop at being CSCAA Academic All-Americans. In May, four of the swimmers and divers were given academic awards during the Lafayette College Honors Convocation. Jen Czochor was awarded the J. Hunt Wilson Prize in Analytical Chemistry and will be attending graduate school at Yale University in the fall. Marcella Nehrbass was awarded the Charles L. Best Memorial Prize in AB Engineering and will be attending Duke University graduate school next year. Junior Kristen Tyler was awarded the Rev. J.W. and R.S. Porter Bible Prize in religious studies and was awarded the James F. Bryant'40 Excellence Award for being a scholar-athlete. Sophomore Stephanie Zielinski was awarded in the Rexroth Prize in German.
"I am so proud of the team's accomplishments," Dailey said. "Every year academics is a team goal we talk about in the beginning of every season. I'm lucky because I never have had to bring the goal up mid-season to remind them to focus. They take care of that on their own." |
