Swimming Opens Rivalry Weekend with Lehigh Dual Meet
BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Lafayette swimming and diving team opened up rivalry weekend with its annual Friday-night dual meet against archrival Lehigh. The host Mountain Hawks claimed victories on the men's (219-80) and women's (244-50) sides in the contest at Jacobs Pool.
"Swimmers took a lot of enthusiasm and energy into the meet tonight especially being shaved and suited and it really paid off," said Lafayette head coach Jim Dailey. "The improvements from the last meet were easily seen."
Lafayette had 10 new performances placed into the all-time top 10. The Lafayette men featured two event winners in James Grieb and Sam Haines. Grieb led a strong showing in the 100 breast, touching the wall first in 57.14 while teammates Ryan van Dijk (third in 58.94) and Weston Lickfeld (fourth in 1:00.37) each finished in the top four. Grieb was also fourth in the 100 freestyle (46.94).
Haines won the 200 butterfly in 1:54.26 and also notched a third-place finish in the 100 fly (51.15). In the distance freestyle events, Tanner McFarland placed third in the 500 free (29.59) and 1000 free (9:47.72). In the 200 free, Bryce Currie claimed third in 1:42.67 while Matt Tascione took third in the 200 breast (2:08.37).
The 800 free relay team of Grieb, Tascione, Currie and Haines was the top relay finisher, placing second in the 800 free relay (6:56.51).
Lafayette's next meet is scheduled for Jan. 16 at St. Peter's.
