Leopard Women Drop Two Heartbreakers at Loyola Meet

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Lafayette swimming and diving team made its first road trip of the 2008-09 season on Saturday afternoon to take part in a four-way meet with Seton Hall, Georgetown and host Loyola.

The Leopard women fell to by one team point, 150.50 to 149.50 and just three points to Seton Hall (151-148). The men also dropped all head-to-head team scores, the closest being a 161-135 defeat at the hands of Georgetown.

Despite the team scores, Lafayette had numerous standout individual performances. Senior Marcella Nehrbass grabbed the first of her multiple win day in the sprints, clocking in at 24.57 to grab the 50 yard freestyle win. Later, she was victorious in the 100 yard freestyle, touching in at 53.31.

Junior Kristen Tyler turned in a first place showing of her own, tying for the win with a 59.36 time in the 100 yard butterfly.

Freshman Alex Brannick continued her fast start to the 2008-09 campaign with a 59.84 victory in the 100 yard backstroke. Sophomore teammate Maricate Conlon was just off Brannick's pace, finishing two spots back at 1:00.73, less than a second behind Brannick.

Conlon (2:10.54) and Brannick (2:11.27) teamed up again later in the afternoon, as they finished second and third in the 200 yard backstroke.

Sophomore diver Leah Goldberg turned in a solid performance on the one meter board, racking up 214.50 points for a fourth place finish.

The 400 yard freestyle relay foursome of Tyler, junior Hilary White, Kerry Nichols and Nehrbass wrapped up the Leopard scoring for the afternoon with a second place, 3:38.62 showing in the final women's event of the day.
 

 

The men were led by freshman Cory Schutz and the diving tandem of senior Brian Cronise and junior Kevin Oswalt. Schutz swam a 59.86 to finish third in the 100 yard breastroke and later duplicated his bronze performance with a 2:13.12 time in the 200 yard breaststroke.

Cronise was dominant on the three meter board for the Leopards, totaling 265.30 points on the afternoon. Oswalt (255.65) fell in just behind his Lafayette teammate, giving the Leopards a one-two finish on the board. The duo continued their one-two, perfect afternoon on the one meter board, as Cronise (261.25) again found the top spot, with Oswalt (239.05) settled into second place.

Like the women, the men's Leopard 400 yard freestyle relay team also touched in for second place, as freshmen Stephen McCormick and Michael Black, along with senior Seth Price and junior John Jenkins finished at 3:16.88.

Lafayette will take the week to prepare for a Patriot League quad meet next Saturday, Nov. 8, when the Leopards travel to Lewisburg, Pa. for a showdown with Bucknell, Navy and American. The meet is set to begin at noon.
