Leopards Open Season in Four-Way Meet

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Lafayette swimming and diving teams officially opened the 2012-13 season on Saturday in a four-way meet against Seton Hall and Drexel that was hosted by future Patriot League member Loyola (Md.).
On the women's side, Jane Kuntz turned in a first-place performance in the 200 individual medley. The sophomore clocked a time of 2:06.06 as the lone event winner for the Leopards on the day. Kuntz bested her nearest competitor by 26 hundredths.
Jackie Andrews stood out in the butterfly events, claiming second in the 200 fly (2:11.55) and third in the 100 (59.23).
Sophomore Megan Kaveney touched the wall in second place in the 50 freestyle (24.70) while ending fifth in the 100 free (54.99). Junior Lauren Berry turned in a fifth-place performance in the 50-yard free.
Kate Durkan, who finished fifth in the 100 backstroke, was also a member of the 400 free relay team, joining Kelsey Theriault, Jacqueline Johnson and Berry. They finished second with a time of 3:41.66.
The men also enjoyed some relay success. Evan Newbold, Greg Grewal, Joshua Hitchings and Robert Lowery took second in the 200 medley relay in 1:37.42. Lafayette followed with a third-place result in the 400 free relay with Lowery, Christopher Wickwire, Adam Gill and Newbold, swimming a time of 3:15.24.
Grewal was the individual standout for the men, adding a second-place finish in the 100 breast stroke (59.51) and a third place in the 200 breast (2:12.26).
Lowery finished fifth in the 50 free (22.03) and fourth in the 100 free (48.45). Newbold (5th in 100 back, 54.52), Gill (6th in 200 butterfly, 2:00.58), and Dan Ladd (5th in 200 back, 2:00.51) recorded top-six finishes.
The Leopards return home for their next meet, hosting Bucknell, Navy and American on Friday, Nov. 2.
