ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Lafayette men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened the 2018 Patriot League Championships on Thursday at the United States Naval Academy's Lejeune Hall.

The 3-meter diving highlighted the first day with preliminaries in the afternoon and the finals in the evening. George Bell took home 16th place in event.

In the 200 free, James Grieb moved into seventh in Lafayette's all-time top 10, swimming a time of 1:42.06. Bryce Currie nudged into eight spot in the all-time top 10 with a 1:42.42 split in the 800 free relay.

The 800 free relay of Grieb, Currie, Matt Tascione, and Tanner McFarland placed seventh in 6:51.80.

Allie McBrearty took advantage of her 200 medley relay participation, swimming a 23.80 split in the freestyle leg to place her sixth in the Lafayette's all-time top 10 in the 50 free.

"Tomorrow's events (500 free, 200IM, 50 free, women's 1m diving and 400 medley relay) should have more of our swimmers making moves," said Lafayette head coach Jim Dailey. "With only 8 swimmers competing on the first day, everyone that didn't compete today is anxious about getting in and performing well tomorrow. They will get their chance."

Day two of the Patriot League Swimming & Diving Championships will begin with preliminaries at 10 a.m. on Thursday with finals following at 6 p.m.
