Whiteman Gives Leopards Top Finish at Bucknell Invite
LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Lafayette swimming and diving wrapped up its last competition before the Patriot League championships, competing in the Bison Invitational on Saturday at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium.
Laracuente (9th in 100 fly in 53.56 and 8th in 200 IM in 2:02.54) Doherty (8th in 100 free in 48.60) and Currie (9th in 100 free in 48.77) added individual top-10 finishes as did Haines (9th in 500 free in 5:00.94 and 7th in 200 free 1:48.34).
Junior Nick Whiteman had the top overall finish for the Leopards, placing third in the 1650 freestyle in a time of 17:21.79, trailed by classmate Ryan Moore in sixth (18:24.74) and freshman Mitchell Cairns in seventh (18:29.53). Whiteman also added a ninth-place effort in the 100 back (58.83).
Sophomore James Grieb also had a solid showing, placing seventh in the 200 IM (2:01.58) and 10th in the 100 breast (1:00.65). In the swimming and diving competition senior Issaiah Coldren placed fourth in the one-meter (155.45) and three-meter (161.05) events.
For the Lafayette women, sophomore Kara Rosenthal had the top individual performance, ending sixth in the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:18.90. In the 400 IM, freshman Emily Benson finished eighth (5:07.73) and senior Stephanie Nickerson ninth (5:12.46). In the final women's sprint event of the day, Faye Melekos finished 10th in the 50 free, clocking a time of 26.04.
Lafayette will continue its preparation before returning to competition at the Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships on Feb. 15-18.
