Fencing Competes in Packed Weekend

EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette fencing team competed in a full weekend of action this past Friday and Sunday, as the Leopards fell to Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday in Teaneck, N.J. and the women participated in the National Intercollegiate Women’s Fencing Association’s annual Christmas Tournament on Sunday at Rutgers.

Foils junior Alexandra Knobel and senior Lisa DeJoseph advanced to the final round of the tournament, with Knobel medaling in fifth place. Sophomore foil Colleen Way advanced to the third round, while epees freshman Elizabeth Gill and sophomore Allison Reich, along with sophomore sabre Leah Hayden all advanced to the second grouping before being eliminated.

On Friday, FDU came away with the 21-6 victory over the Leopards. DeJoseph, Way and Knobel contributed all six wins for Lafayette as they each went 2-1 on the afternoon. Reich and Gill went 0-3, respectively, in the foil, while Hayden and sophomore Sarah Woodruff went a combined 0-6 in the sabre.

Nine members of the Lafayette squad will compete in the NIWFA Championships at Swarthmore on Mar. 2. Junior Jillian Rodamilia, sophomore Makenzie Danis and junior Caitlin Altomare will join DeJoseph, Way, Gill, Reich, Hayden and Woodruff in the tournament.

Next up for the Maroon and White is a trip to Madison, N.J. to take on NJIT on Feb. 9.
