Fencing Takes Eighth at NIWFA Championships

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Lafayette women’s fencing team traveled to Swarthmore College over the weekend to compete in the NIWFA Championships. The team finished eighth overall, while four members advanced into the Individual Finals round.
Foil was the strongest weapon for the team as that squad finished fourth overall and placed three members in the top five of their respective divisions. Senior Lisa DeJoseph took fourth in the ‘A’ division with an 11-5 overall record, while sophomore Colleen Way went 10-6 in the ‘B’ division, earning fifth place and classmate Makenzie Danis finished second in the ‘C’ division with a record of 14-2 on the day.
In the Sabre, junior Jillian Rosamilia advanced to the elimination round with a record of 10-6 on the day, good enough for sixth in the ‘A’ division. Additionally, sophomore Leah Hayden took 11th in the ‘B’ division with a 6-10 record for the afternoon and the team took the 10th spot.
Finally in the epee, two of the three Leopard fencers finished in the top ten as sophomore Allison Reich held 10th place with a 6-10 record for the day in the ‘A’ division. Junior Caitlin Altomare took ninth with a 7-9 mark in the ‘B’ division and freshman Elizabeth Gill finished in 15th at 4-12 in the ‘C’ division.
Next up for the Leopards is the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Championships, being held at Lafayette on Saturday.
