Fencing Competes at Drew University

EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette fencing team traveled to Drew University on Sunday afternoon, with the men winning two of three matches, and the women winning one of three matches. The men defeated Cornell 17-10, Rutgers 16-11 and fell to Drew 16-11. The women beat Queens (17-8), but lost twice to Princeton (21-6, 23-4).

Sophomore foil Phillip Manna led the way for the Leopards, going 7-2 on the day. Senior co-captain David Eckelmann and classmate Darrell Washington each went 6-3, Eckelmann with the epee and Washington with the saber.

Eric Luby, a junior sabre, went 5-4 on the afternoon, while senior epee Andre Rafizadeh won four out of his six bouts. Fellow epee's Daniel Robitzski and David Jennings went 4-2 and 3-3, respectively. Freshman Joshua Kwak earned a victory in his only action on Sunday afternoon.

The women's team was lead by their group of foils, who won 17 out of their 27 duels. Senior Colleen Way and sophomore co-captain Lisa DeJoseph led the Leopards each going 6-3 for the day. Classmate Mackenzie Danis went 5-4 in the event.

Junior saber Jill Rosamila went 5-4 for the day. Rosamila and sophomore Leah Hayden combined to go 6-0 in their match against Queens.

Next up for the Leopards, the women will compete in the NIWFA Championships on March 2, while the men will compete in the MACFA Championships on March 3.
