Go Leopards!

Feb. 18, 2014

NEWARK, N.J. – The Lafayette fencing program rounded out their regular season with an impressive overall performance this past weekend at NJIT in Newark, N.J.

The foil trio of juniors Phillip Manna, Timothy Gaziano and freshman Brandon Smith led the way for the men’s squad who defeated Hunter, Yeshiva, and NJIT but dropped decisions to Army and Stevens. Men’s foil was 31-14 on the day including an 11-4 performance (10-2 in varsity bouts) by Manna. Gaziano and Smith both went 10-5 overall during competition.

For the women, the foil squad was also a big contributing factor as the Leopards defeated Queens and NJIT. Lafayette, however, dropped bouts to FDU, Rutgers and Army. The women foilists went 32-13 including 9-0 sweeps against Queens and Army. Senior Alexandra Knobel (10-4 overall, 6-2 in varsity) and freshman Julia Sheng (11-3 overall, 5-3 in varsity) led the way for the Maroon & White.

The women are back in action March 1 as they compete in the NIWFA Conference Championships while the men compete in the MACFA Conference Championships on March 2. Both events will be held in West Point, N.Y.
