Fencing Splits at Drew University
EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette women’s fencing team traveled to Drew University to take on Drew and Vassar College over the weekend. The team defeated Drew in two of the three matches, taking the epee and the foil against the Rangers.
Sophomore Julia Sheng led the way for the Leopards going 5-1 in the event. Senior Colleen Way and freshman Andie Mitchell each went 4-2 in the foil. Freshman Haley Mauriello led the epee’s and Leah Hayden led the sabre’s with a 4-2 marks.
The Leopards beat Drew 9-0 in the foil, as Sheng, Colleen Way and Andie Mitchell each picked up three wins in the dual. In the epee bout against Drew, Mauriello and Costanza Davis picked up a pair of wins, while Allison Reich grabbed a victory in the 5-4 win. Leah Hayden won two duals in the sabre matches, but the Leopards fell to Drew, 5-3.
Against Vassar, the foils fell 5-4, as Sheng won two of her three bouts. The epees were led by Mauriello’s two wins, in a 6-3 setback, while Hayden picked up a pair of wins in the sabre against Vassar.
The Leopards travel to Baltimore, Md. to compete in the MACFA on February 8.
