GLADSTONE, N.J. - Lafayette's golf team reclaimed the President's Cup with a decisive 9.5 to 6.5 victory over rival Lehigh at renowned Hamilton Farm Golf Club in Gladstone, N.J.
The day-long event featured a Ryder Cup-style format. Play began in the morning on the 7,140-yard, par-72 Highlands Course with four better ball nine-hole doubles matches. Lafayette claimed an early 3-1 lead in the morning matches. The second nine holes in the morning featured doubles play with an alternate shot format. The two teams split the alternate shot pairings, giving Lafayette a 5-3 advantage through the morning matchtes.
The afternoon session featured eight singles matches on the Hickory Course, the only 18-hole, USGA-rated par-three course in the country. Lafayette won the singles matches, 4.5-3.5.
Jake Basilico starred for the Leopards throughout the day, winning each of his three matches, including a dominating 7 and 5 victory in his singles match. Aidan McDermott, Brendan Cronin, Creighton Hendrix and Pat McGinley each won two of their three matches.
This was the seventh annual President's Cup match. Lafayette leads Lehigh in the series, 4-3, with the Leopards winning the cup in 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2017.
The Leopards next compete in the Lehigh Fall Invitational Oct. 20-21 on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club.
