Lafayette's Athletics Program Certified for Academic Integrity and Other Positive Attributes by NCAA

May 25, 2006

Lafayette's Division I intercollegiate athletics program has earned reaffirmation of its certification by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for conformity with the NCAA's operating principles in the areas of academic integrity, governance and rules compliance, and equity and student-athlete welfare.

The reaffirmation, announced Thursday by the NCAA, signifies that Lafayette is operating its athletics program in accordance with the high standards adopted by the NCAA's Division I membership.

Lafayette offers 23 varsity sports, 11 for men, 11 for women and one that is coed. Lafayette is a charter member of the Patriot League, which was founded on the principle of admitting athletes who are academically representative of their class.

Lafayette President Dan Weiss said, "Lafayette is firmly committed to offering students the opportunity to participate in an intercollegiate athletics program that is fully integrated with the College's educational mission and deeply enriches the Lafayette experience. The NCAA's reaffirmation of the College's athletics certification reflects our continuing success in carrying out that commitment."

Bruce McCutcheon, Lafayette's director of athletics, said, "I am pleased that this process has increased awareness among all Lafayette constituencies, on and off campus, of the integrity and successes of our athletics program and high level of academic achievement of Lafayette's student-athletes."

"The study was done with the participation of representatives of all sectors of the campus community," said Barry McCarty, dean of enrollment management and chair of Lafayette's Athletics Certification Steering Committee. "I am grateful to all of those whose dedication and hard work have resulted in the reaffirmation of our certification."

In accordance with NCAA guidelines mandating periodic evaluations of Division I athletics programs, subcommittees made up of faculty, students, and administrators completed an extensive examination Lafayette's athletics program with respect to its compliance with NCAA operating principles pertaining to academic integrity, governance and rules compliance, and equity and student-athlete welfare.

The comprehensive self-study, which took more than a year, was undertaken as part of the second cycle of the NCAA's Division I athletics certification program. Lafayette has been certified by the NCAA since 1998, the first phase of the national certification initiative. The study was completed last fall, and the College submitted a report on the findings to the NCAA in October.

In February, a peer-review team of representatives from other Division I colleges and universities visited Lafayette to evaluate the self-study and the athletics program's conformity with NCAA operating principles. This peer-review team reported its findings to the NCAA's Committee on Athletics Certification, which announced the reaffirmation of Lafayette's certification.

Lafayette Athletics, as a partner in the mission of the College, provides an incredibly effective learning experience for student-athletes through competitive NCAA Division I athletics. Lafayette sponsors 23 varsity sports with more than 600 student-athletes.
