EASTON, Pa. - Seniors Stephanie Benko and Greg Grewal have been named the Maroon Club Scholar-Athletes of the Year. The two will be honored at the Maroon Club Hall of Fame dinner held Friday night in Marquis Hall.
To be eligible for the award, select student-athletes must be nominated by their coaches who, along with athletic administrators, vote for the male and female winners.
Benko, a competitor on the track & field and cross country teams, maintains a 3.68 GPA as a Biology major and Spanish minor. She has been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in each eligible semester, and she is a four-time Dean's List student. Extremely active on campus, Benko is the president of the Delta Gamma Fraternity, she is the Chair of Lafayette's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and she is the VP for Fundraising for the Lafayette chapter of Colleges Against Cancer.
Benko is also a 360 leader for the Oaks Leadership Academy, a teaching assistant for Evolutionary Biology, and an ATTIC peer tutor in Organic Chemistry.
A two-year cross country and track & field captain, Benko is the school record holder in the 3000m steeplechase, and she was Patriot League champion in the event in 2014. Benko was additionally the conference runner-up in the steeplechase in 2013, and she ranks in the top five in program history in the outdoor 5000m and indoor 3000m races. In cross country, she has been Lafayette's top female runner for a majority of the past two years.
"Steph has been a tremendous leader for our teams during her time at Lafayette," distance coach Jen Buirkle said. "She has an unwavering work ethic that has allowed her to not only be our top runner, but also a leader in several other extracurricular activities on campus."
Grewal been an All-Patriot League caliber swimmer while maintaining a 3.54 GPA in Chemical Engineering. A Dean's List student and two-time member of the Patriot League All-Academic Team, Grewal has been a consistent presence on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
In the pool, Grewal is a U.S. Trial Qualifier who made the 2014 and 2015 NCAA Division I "B" qualifying standard in the 100 breast. He holds school records in four events (100 breast, 200 breast, 200 medley relay, and 400 medley relay) and is in Lafayette's all-time top 10 in five events. Grewal achieved All-Patriot League Second-Team honors his sophomore and junior years and has been named the team's Most Valuable Swimmer the last two seasons.
Away from the pool, Grewal is the philanthropy chair for Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, serves as a Chemical Engineering peer mentor and is an executive board member for Colleges Against Cancer. He has also participated in the Oaks Leadership Academy. An EXCEL scholar, Grewal published research in 2015.
"Greg has a tireless pursuit of academic and athletic excellence, setting high standards for himself and his teammates to achieve," said Lafayette swimming and diving coach Jim Dailey. "He has committed himself to the academic opportunities of the school and athletic traditions of the swimming program."
