EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) announced this week its plan to host an Athlete Ally game during each of Lafayette's athletic seasons in the 2016-17 athletic year. The first Athlete Ally game will take place on Wednesday with women's soccer versus Lehigh at 7 p.m.
Lafayette became part of the Athlete Ally program when the organization's co-founder Hudson Taylor, who coaches wrestling at Columbia, visited campus this past spring and addressed Lafayette's student-athletes and coaches. His focus was in educating, encouraging and empowering straight athlete allies to combat homophobia and transphobia in sports.
Gavin Studner '16 and Abbey Stefanides '16 took the opportunity to partner SAAC with Athlete Ally to further this mission. This season, SAAC is continuing the movement, asking each sports team to pick a game in which Athlete Ally will be the focus. Athlete Ally's mission is to teach and inform athletes about the LGBT community as a way to end homophobia and transphobia in athletics.
