Fourth Annual Junior Firefighter Run Set for Sept. 30 at Metzgar Athletic Complex
Sept. 24, 2007
EASTON, Pa. - The fourth annual Junior Firefighter 5K Run will be held at Lafayette College's Metzgar Fields Athletic Complex on Sunday, Sept. 30. All proceeds of the race go directly to the Sean Cameron Memorial Scholarship Fund, which supports junior firefighters from Easton Area High School, Nazareth High School and Notre Dame Green Pond High School.
To register for the 5K run or 1.2 mile walk, please visit www.forksfire.com or contact the Lafayette Athletic Communications department at (610) 330-5897.
The race, which is scheduled to start at 9 a.m., will begin at the Metzgar Fields Athletic Complex and travel along Sullivan Trail, before returning to the Metzgar campus.
Cameron was a junior at Notre Dame Green Pond High School before tragically passing away in a car accident four years ago. In addition to playing soccer in high school, Cameron devoted much of his extracurricular time and energy to the Forks Township Junior Firefighter program.
Bob and Cathy Cameron, Sean's parents, are the organizers of the race that continues to expand annually in its brief existence.
"The whole race is built on volunteerism," Bob Cameron said. "From the sponsors who donate financially, to the workers who donate physcially, to the students who receive their scholarships for their devotion to the fire deparment and community, it's become a community effort."
Junior firefighters are able to begin training before joining the fire department. Junior firefighters, who must be at least 14 years old to enroll in the program, begin to learn the basics of fire rescue and emergency medical services. Academic standards and a code of ethics also accompany the membership.
Like regular firefighters, juniors endure a probationary period to allow themselves and the fire department to get acclimated to one another. Of the 2550 volunteer fire departments in Pennsylvania, approximately 75 percent of the departments have junior firefighter programs.
Donations can also be made to the Junior Firefighter 5K Race by visiting www.forksfire.com or contacting the Lafayette Athletic Communications department.
