EASTON, Pa. (The Express-Times) - Wally Benack, a Phillipsburg High football star who went on to work nearly 40 years for The Express-Times, died suddenly Friday in Dayton, Ohio.

Benack, 58, of Forks Township, was stricken in a hotel parking lot shortly after checking out while on his way to Indianapolis, said his wife, Becky.
Benack had spent Thursday night in Dayton and planned to drive Friday to Indianapolis to attend a racing memorabilia show and the Indianapolis 500, his wife said.
Family, friends and co-workers were stunned by his passing.
Besides his wife, Benack is survived by a son, Danny, who just finished his freshman year at Bloomsburg University.
Wally Benack loved sports and was involved in athletics all his life.
He had coached youth sports in Forks Township and worked the last two years as Lafayette College's official basketball scorekeeper and football statistician.
