Leopards Split With North Carolina A&T To Open Softball Season

GREENSBORO, N.C. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette softball team split two decisions with North Carolina A&T, 6-8, 7-2, to open its 2001 season on Tuesday.

In the first game, senior Becky Chmielowski slammed two homeruns in her two at bats to finish the game with two RBI and two runs scored for Lafayette. Sophomore shortstop Mara Shainheit also homered in the game and sophomore catcher Becky Foley went 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.

Freshman Megan Longo picked up the loss for the Leopards, allowing eight runs on 11 hits with one strikeout. Cheretta Stevenson recorded the 8-6 win for the Lady Aggies, pitching a complete game and giving up six runs on six hits. She notched four strikeouts in the contest.

In game two, senior outfielder Kelly Wise belted out three doubles en route to a 3-for-4, 3 RBI outing. Freshman Laura Shrager was 2-for4 while five of her teammates, including Wise, recorded doubles in the 7-2 win.

Freshman Mollie Moschberger recorded the win for the Leopards, allowing just two runs on six hits with two strikeouts.

Lafayette (1-1) continues its opening season road trip with a stop at Campbell University on Wednesday for a doubleheader before heading to the George Mason Tournament this weekend.
